Megatron's hasty attack backfires as Shockwave inflicts a crushing defeat!
Outside the Ark Ratchet is starting to fear for the safety of his friend and ally Buster. His concerns only deepen when he realises that Shockwave has risen from the dead and now returns to the Ark. Inside, Buster recovers from his mindlink with Prime and staggers outside to Ratchet what he has learned about the fate of the Autobots. Megatron meanwhile finds he can contain himself no longer and breaks free from his bonds. Though he is not fully recovered, he seeks out Shockwave and unleashes a blast from his fusion cannon - so mighty that Shockwave is propelled through the side of the mountain and into a human settlement some miles below.
Megatron persues, determined to destroy the ursurper and win back his command. But Shockwave fights back, blasting Megatron and striking him with a water tower. The contents of which spill on to his wounds and fry his circuitry. Shockwave seizes the moment to transform into spacegun mode and finish off his opponent. He reverts to robot mode and picks up the battered wreck of Megatron from the bottom of a huge crater. Megatron begs to be spared the humiliation of being allowed to live, but Shockwave has need of him for now. Shortly after, as Ratchet and Buster look on, Shockwave returns to the Ark carrying the heavily damaged Megatron. Now reduced to a mockery of his former self, Megatron is paraded before the other Decepticons as an example of what happens to those who defy Shockwave. The Decepticons in unison pledge their lives and loyalty to the new commander, and Megatron, humiliatingly, does the same.
The first of the great battles between Megs and Shockwave. My sympathies were with Megatron on this occasion but there was no way he was going to win, still not fully recovered from his injuries in issue 8. Still it was typical of Megs to give way to anger and rush into battle, thus proving Shockwave's point that he is better placed to command. On the final panel of this story Ratchet is drawn with a red Decepticon insignia - oops! This week's Soundwaves settles a long running debate over whether Ravage is a jaguar or a dog. We are told his robot form is in fact closest to a jaguar.
